Alejandro Stochetti

AS+GG Design Director Alejandro Stochetti AIA, is building an impressive body of international work in all scales and typologies.  He embraces the challenges of highly prominent projects with global exposure as well as of smaller, cost-conscious projects, with their own transformative potential. Alejandro has been the senior designer and leader in a wide-variety of projects, from the megatall Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia to the typologically diverse Astana Expo City in Kazakhstan. His built projects include residential, commercial, and cultural typologies ranging from Burj Vista, a two-tower residential complex in Dubai, to Energy Hall and Congress Center, two cultural facilities in Astana.

Alejandro believes that the design process is a collaborative effort and an opportunity to positively transform the environment to better serve a community. And while he appreciates the lessons learned from each design process, he also believes in the opportunity to re-invent, re-imagine, and go beyond what is known to achieve and set higher design standards. Through nearly 20 years of experience, Alejandro has learned that sometimes designing is solving problems of different degrees of complexities; other times designing is about opening windows of opportunities where they did not seem to exist.

He has lectured and published internationally on AS+GG’s sustainable design philosophy with topics that include “Form Follows Performance” and “The Challenges of a Supertall Building.”

Alejandro is currently the senior designer and team leader of Al Wasl Plaza, the centerpiece of the upcoming Expo2020 Dubai that combines breathtaking design, innovative technology, and an intricate domed trellis with a huge immersive projection experience. Recently he was the senior designer responsible for Astana Expo City, a master planning and design project for the last international exposition – and its legacy configuration – that took place in Kazakhstan in 2017.
Alejandro’s other recent projects at AS+GG include Jeddah Tower, the world’s next tallest building. At over 1,000 meters and a total construction area of 530,000 square meters (5.7 million square feet), Jeddah Tower will be the centerpiece and first construction phase of the Kingdom City development on a 5.3 million-square-meter site in north Jeddah.

Before joining AS+GG, Alejandro was a senior designer at Skidmore Owings & Merrill, where he was involved in the design and development of Burj Khalifa in Dubai, Las Vegas Tower in Las Vegas, Wind and Garden Tower in King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) in Saudi Arabia, the KAEC master plan, and the Suzhou Convention and Exhibition Center, in China. His experience also includes work in the Middle East, Europe, Asia, North America, and his native Argentina.

Alejandro Stochetti on...

design
Design goes beyond solving very challenging questions but asking the right ones—the ones that have not been asked before—and daring to answer them. It is fun but is also painful; you know everything can be done better, and you are always trying to do so.

his favorite "moment" in architecture
Every change in paradigm, every time architects dared to break the rules for the right reasons, and changed the way and the reasons architecture was being done.

his favorite city architecturally
Barcelona, and some parts of Rome. I am sure there are amazing pieces of cities all around the world, but the magic for most cities occurs in the small scale of a special street or plaza or waterfront. It is all about the human scale, its scents, its food, its people. Buildings can become frame or background that allows everyday activity to occur smoothly. Our best architecture and urban planning should encourage the vernacular life to flourish.

his biggest accomplishment at AS+GG
Continuously and in every project search for the best and optimal solution, challenge the program and the apparent straightforward solution, asking how things could be changed and if they should. In doing so, I always ask every team members to be critical and objective. There is never the only and right answer but different views that I want to hear and consider.

what he'd be if he weren't an architect
A musician, a composer or an orchestra director. I have always been amazed by the power of music. Like any other art, including architecture, it can transform human existence and elevate it to a higher spiritual level.
