Dennis Rehill on...

design
I'm drawn to design because I enjoy the challenge of trying to transform an art form into a working, livable, breathable building. Likewise, I enjoy the buzz of working through program, design and tectonic issues while trying to convince the client and contractor of their viability and importance.

where he finds inspiration
In both the physical and social context. These two elements must be rationalized at the same time, as architecture without the social context is merely an art object in the physical world.

his favorite "moment" in architecture
The start of the early modern movement where you see the proliferation of the early Modernists like Eileen Gray, Michael Scott, Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe.

his favorite city architecturally
Venice. There is a sense of mystery to this city of the water. I enjoy the different scale of the architecture and public spaces. I enjoy the play scales between the narrow canals and pathways to the large piazzas and beaches. Not to mention the work of Carlo Scarpa…

his favorite thing about a collaborative design process
I really enjoy the interaction between the client and the design team. Each party has their own specific agenda, and it's up to the architect to orchestrate the different parties to create the initial concept into a tangible working building.

his biggest accomplishment at AS+GG
I believe we have collectively assembled a studio of architects that are highly creative and passionate about their work. I am really proud of the team dynamic that has formed within the studio and the high level of output we have created on projects such as the Wings Museum, Matrix Gateway Complex and Crystal Center.

what he'd be if he weren't an architect
A teacher. I enjoy the interaction and the creative process of teaching and learning as both mutually co-exist.

what he does when he's not designing
Exploring—whether it be traveling and experiencing new cultures, advancing my professional development or expanding my linguistic skills.
