Peter Kindel on . . .
. . . design
The design process is something that I find both inspirational and challenging. To be effective on a project, it requires both discipline and creativity, which are often two opposing states of mind. I try to de-mystify the creative portion of the design process by working collaboratively with other professionals, working through many iterations of a problem, and trying to "fail early." This means getting the less successful strategies tested and out of the way. In this way, the creative side of the design process is more accessible to others and results in better solutions. I also feel strongly that everyone can and should design. It's a natural part of the human condition to try and improve your physical environment.
. . .where he gets his inspiration
I draw my inspiration from three sources: the client, the natural world, and observations of how society organizes itself. With the clients, I feel strongly that the project must meet their needs or else you don't have a project. Clients also have specific perspectives and goals which make our design solutions unique. With the natural world, I am continually amazed at how elegant natural forms and processes can be: the way the landscape will repair itself after being disturbed, and the fact that there is no waste in nature. We still have a lot to learn from the natural world, and we need to be more respectful of how we treat it. Finally, observing and interacting with other people is continually inspiring. I have an intrinsic desire to solve problems and make our physical world better.
. . . his favorite moment in architecture
For me it was a six-week trip I took to Japan in graduate school. I had never been to Japan, and I was astounded by the attention to detail and design that permeates the culture. From the smallest household utensil to the largest temple, most everything in their society is functional, simple, well-crafted and beautifully designed. And while things are designed in a simple way, they also mix materials to create variety and richness. It is quite inspiring.
. . . his favorite architectural city
Chicago. It has many characteristics that are quintessentially American: the broad, open avenues that stretch to the horizon; the ocean-like lake to the east; the changing seasons; the grid of streets; the great buildings and parks. There is simply a sense of openness and possibility that pervades the city. If only the weather were better!
. . . his favorite thing about a collaborative design process
The solutions that I didn't expect or never would have thought of. The essence of a collaborative process, by definition, is that everybody will bring a unique perspective to the problem. So it forces me out of my normal approach to design problems.
. . . what he'd be if he weren't an architect
Rodeo Clown
. . . what he does when he's not designing
Walk my dog, backpack and hike, spend time with my wife, and try to be outside as much as possible.
