And the Winners Are...
The American Institute of Architects gives the stamp of approval to three very different Chicago projects. when it comes to the built environment, this town just gets better and better. And the AIA (aia.org) is taking notice. Ross Barney Architects and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill have been recognized with 2018 Honors Awards - the profession's highest recognition of excellence - while Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture has snagged a 2017 Innovation Award. Well Done!
CENTER STAGE: As most of Chicago knows, Navy Pier has a new, much-needed makeover. And longtime resident Chicago Shakespeare Theater has gotten in on the action, taking over the underutilized Skyline State, which was transformed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture into a highly flexible venue now called The Yard. By inserting the new performance space beneath the existing tent-like structure with nine audience seating towers that can be rearranged in a variety of configurations, the firm created a highly flexible. space. The design was applauded by jury chair Roger Schluntz of the School of Architecture and Planning, University of New Mexico, for "its use of technology and design creativity." The lobby has been fashioned with an electrochromic glass facade that not only darkens during the day to reduce heat but lightens in the cool of the evening to reveal the interior and the pre-show drama of audiences assembling. Architects, take a bow.
