Congratulations 2013 Honor Awards Winners!

Architects gathered at the conclusion of Architecture Week (April 7-12, 2013) in the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum to celebrate the people and projects representing the best of the Illinois architecture profession.

With Anthony Rubano of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency serving as emcee, AIA Illinois presented five Honor Awards for service and five awards for design from 90 total nominations. “Illinois architects wowed our national jury with their talent and achievements,” said Brandy Koch, 2013 AIA Illinois President, who convened the national jury and served as an ex officio member.

Koch continued, “Illinois holds a special place in architectural history, with leaders like Wright, van der Rohe and Sullivan literally shaping not only communities around the world but the field of architecture itself. Today’s architects are certainly not resting on our laurels. The jury had a very difficult time selecting this year’s winners and would have given out even more awards if we’d let them.  They often commented that they wished they could experience each amazing project in person.”

The Daniel Burnham Honor Award was presented to Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture for their Chicago Central Area Decarbonization Plan, a year-long design process which resulted in strategies for helping Chicago achieve a 25% reduction in carbon emissions below 1990 levels by 2020 and a 100% reduction in carbon emissions in new and renovated buildings by 2030. Highlights of the plan include: completing and linking a below-grade pedway system in the Loop; creating a green corridor and below-grade inter-modal axis on Monroe Street; repurposing the Loop’s underground tunnels as a pneumatic waste disposal system; and extending the existing Chicago riverwalk and bicycle paths to increase mobility within and across the Loop.
