Compensar Family Entertainment Center

Compensar Family Entertainment Center

The Compensar Family Entertainment Center is a pavilion for learning located in the Compensar athletic park in Bogota, Colombia. That building incorporates communal, flexible spaces that allow for multi-disciplinary activity and a range of programs. Indoor and outdoor spaces encourage interaction with both natural elements and technology.

The project was designed to be highly flexible. The pavilions were envisioned as a series of ‘toy boxes’ for children, and programs can be removed and installed as required. This maximized the center’s potential for multi-disciplinary activities. The center includes computer labs and recreational areas for children.

The pavilion’s form and clear glass allowed enough sunlight to create a greenhouse garden capable of housing plants that would not otherwise survive in the exterior conditions. The greenhouse offers both enhanced views and contributes to the didactic nature of the facility.

Adjacent to the pavilion a plaza was incorporated for outdoor performances. The series of stages were set at separate elevations so that they could be used independently or combined for larger events. The pavilion’s upper level was designed to overlook the plaza, further integrating the center into the surrounding context.
