Job Title:         Architectural Designer

Job Location:  Chicago, IL

Job Description:

With preliminary direction from a Project Manager/Project Director analyze client needs and utilize independent thinking to develop design approaches in and participate in all phases of domestic and international architectural design for large scale mixed-use, retail, Corporate, commercial, cultural, and institutional projects from competitions, schematic design and design development through construction documentation and construction administration, including new construction, renovation, modifications to existing building structure, site planning, space planning, custom detailing; research domestic and international building codes and regulations, new materials, new construction methods, sustainable concepts, and Incorporate them into architectural design; generate design concept, system and detail for complex building massing, fit out and facade system and translate clients' functional and spatial requirements into feasible design solutions, coordinating with local architects, consultants, and contractors; participate in project team discussions and presentations, attend public meetings and client meetings; prepare design guidelines, capacity studies, concept plans, development plans, traffic demand management plans, and traffic impact analysis; prepare optimized building shape and/or building envelope by linking parametric design tool, environmental analysis and BIM software, incorporating environmental studies and passive/sustainable design strategies into building system and facade/exterior envelope design, and design and develop various sustainable/high-performance facade/exterior wall systems through a holistic design approach; develop design concept of building facade and space in 2D/3D, translate them into plans, elevations, sections, perspective view drawings and detail drawings, prepare design presentation material, system drawings and special details in 2D and 3D. Fluent parametric modeling and advanced documenting skills in AutoCAD, SketchUp, Rhino, Grasshopper, Digital Project, Maya, Maxwell Studio, Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign; free hand sketch using pencils or marker drawings such as perspectives, axonometrics, space plans, elevations and details for presentations; hand render design drawings, using color pencils, SketchUp, Architectural Desktop 2D/3D, 3D Studio MAX, PhotoShop, Illustrator, Microsoft Office, Powerpoint, and Excel to communicate architectural design concepts, building facade design concepts; develop architectural design and facade system design requiring enlarged plans, elevations, sections, details, diagrams and axonometric drawings; coordinate with engineers and consultants, provide design and engineering solutions (geometrical rationalization, structural coordination, solar-heat, weather and acoustic control optimization) for complex building facade systems, utilize energy analysis, daylighting and radiation studies to achieve high performances in building system design; coordinate with civil, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection (MEP/FP), lighting, landscape, code, traffic, parking, zoning, signage, acoustic, waste management, curtain wall, facade maintenance, special systems, vertical transportation, and structural consultants to incorporate engineering systems into unified design to produce schematic design, design development, or construction documentation drawings for review and approval; analyze sketches, photographs, notes, and site survey of existing conditions & other input material to determine best approaches for completion of drawings to solve technical issues of design in relation to site conditions, building structure, HVAC, electrical and plumbing system, fire protection and materials for intricate detailing; assist the Project Manager in establishing task schedule and planning manpower requirements and material selection consistent with the project agreement and budget and identifying weekly project requirements and projecting long term needs; assist in identifying and quantifying tasks outside the scope of the Owner-Architect agreement for negotiation of additional services; review all related shop drawings, submittals, samples and mock ups; Coordinate project data and transmission and all electronic communications using Newforma, maintaining log of all RFI’s and Submittals; coordinate with contractors, respond to requests for information (RFI’s), review and respond to contractor change orders, and perform necessary modifications of drawings and specifications as construction projects progress and changes in dimensions, materials, and other aspects of design arise; conduct site visits and progress meetings, prepare field observation reports, final inspections, project closeout, including punch lists and record drawings; review and prepare certificates of substantial completion, occupancy, and final completion, and conduct post-occupancy evaluation and review of clients’ use of space.

Job Requirements:
