Job Title: Architectural Designer
Job Location: Chicago, IL
With preliminary direction from a licensed architect, analyze client needs, and participate in all phases of architectural design (Competition, SD/DD/CD Phases) for international and domestic large scale corporate/commercial, mixed use, high rise residential, retail, cultural and institutional projects, from concept design, schematic design, and design development through construction administration; prepare environmental impact studies, urban design guidelines, capacity studies, slope analysis, concept plans, development plans, entitlement plans, and traffic demand management plans; coordinate and analyze sketches, photographs, notes, and other input material for completion of drawings to solve technical issues of design relating to building structure, HVAC system, fire protection and materials for intricate detailing, client needs, sites and buildings; use 2D/3D CAD and building information modeling (BIM) programs, including Revit, AutoCAD, 3D Studio MAX/VIZ, VRay, Maxwell 3D, SketchUp, Rhino, PhotoShop, Illustrator, InDesign, and freehand sketching with markers and pencils to develop design concepts and refine them into design solutions for projects and competitions requiring document production; develop 3D building computer models and images and presentation images; prepare sketches, architectural working drawings (space plan, elevations, sections, perspective), and architectural detail specifications for concept design presentations using 2D/3D CAD and BIM programs, including Revit, Rhino, Maxwell studio, Grasshopper, honeybee, AutoCAD, 3D Studio MAX/VIZ, SketchUp, PhotoShop, Illustrator, Maya and InDesign, and freehand sketching with pencil, ink, water color, and markers; Communicate with sustainability specialized team, incorporate sustainable design principles and strategies into projects, participate in documentation and commissioning process, prepare 3D energy models to evaluate daily sun exposure, analyze heatloads, and maximize energy savings using Ecotect; build physical models using digital fabrication software, 3D printer, and laser cutter for design development and presentations; site survey of existing conditions and take as built measurements; coordinate, develop, and produce construction documentation, including documenting architectural plans, elevations, and details in imperial or metric standards; participate in meetings with clients, consultants, contractors, and public agencies and coordinate for client and agency review and approval; coordinate with civil, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection (MEP/FP), lighting, landscape, code, traffic, parking, kitchen, zoning, signage, acoustic, security, curtain wall, facade maintenance, special systems, vertical transportation, and structural consultants to incorporate building systems into unified design; coordinate project data and transmission and all electronic communications using project information management software Newforma to clients and other consultant; coordinate with local architects, consultants, contractors, model makers, and rendering firm for international projects; develop design and explore specific design elements such as envelope design and exterior wall with architectural enlarged plan, sections, elevations, section detail and axonometric drawings; assist with project consultant agreements and project budgets; assist in identifying and quantifying tasks outside the scope of the Owner-Architect agreement for negotiation of additional services; develop existing and new clients; assist the Project Manager in establishing task schedule and manpower requirements consistent with the project agreement; review shop drawings, samples and mock ups, and assist in reviewing and responding to local architects.
Bachelor of Architecture (5 year) or foreign equivalent plus 2 years experience to include analyzing client needs and space programs to utilize independent thinking to develop approaches in and participated in all phases of architectural design for large scale international corporate/commercial projects from schematic design and design development through construction documentation, including modifications to existing structural systems and space planning; participating in competitions and SD/DD/CD phases of domestic and international commercial, mixed use, high-rise residential, retail, cultural and institutional projects, including new construction, renovation, interiors, unit plans, and site planning; analyzing domestic and international building codes and regulations, and incorporating them into architectural design; coordinating with various consultants and incorporating them into building designs; preparing optimized building shape and building envelop by linking parametric building design tools; performing 2D/3D drafting, modeling, rendering and rationalizing complex geometries using Rhino, Grasshopper, AutoCAD, Maxwell studio, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and freehand sketching; analyzing design concept of buildings and spaces in 2D/3D, translating them into plan, elevation, section and perspective view drawings, and creating and preparing design presentations using freehand sketches and 2D/3D modeling and rendering, including building information modeling (BIM) using Revit, Rhino, Grasshopper, AutoCAD, Maxwell studio, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign; translating clients' functional and spatial requirements into feasible design solutions, incorporating custom detailing, structural engineering principles and building systems into architectural designs; working on specific technical design aspects of an assigned project including investigation, evaluation, and recommendation of design solutions; performing assignments under direct supervision of team leader or senior architect, with limited responsibility for design; organizing meetings, recording, and distribution of meeting minutes, 3D rendering, and advanced graphic representation and presentations; developing building exterior facade system including development of optimized exterior wall details; preparing project descriptions including coordination with consultants.
