With direction from the director and the project manager, analyze client needs and utilize independent thinking to develop approaches in all phases of international and domestic large scale mixed use, retail, entertainment, high rise residential, cultural, museum, institutional, education, and large scale commercial projects, including new construction, interiors, parking garage, unit plans, and site planning; participate in all phases of urban infill development projects, including urban design, mixed use regeneration, urban revitalization, urban planning, streetscapes, land use and transportation, and open space planning projects, from pre-design to all phases of projects, including initial concept development, space planning and programming, custom detailing and research for building codes and barrier free compliance; prepare environmental impact studies, urban design guidelines, capacity studies, slope analysis, concept plans, development plans, entitlement plans, and traffic demand management plans; coordinate input from multiple partners, including local design institutes and consultants to translate into site and building plans; apply own judgment, analysis and computer skills to develop 3D building computer models and images, and presentation images; analyze sketches, photographs, notes, and other input material to determine best approaches for completion of drawings to solve technical issues of design in relation to building structure, HVAC system, fire protection and materials for intricate detailing, client needs, sites and buildings; utilize independent thinking and 2D/3D CAD and building information modeling programs, including Revit, AutoCAD, Rhino, Maxwell, SketchUp, PhotoShop, Illustrator, InDesign, and freehand sketching with markers and pencils to develop design concepts and refine them into design solutions, producing clear and compelling design presentations for design and concept development for projects and competitions requiring expedited concept development and document production; preparing 3D energy models to evaluate daily sun exposure, analyzing heatloads, and maximizing energy savings using EnergyPlus (Designbuilder, OpenStudio); prepare 3D Daylighting simulation model in Radiance, Daysim with Honeybee; prepare Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation to evaluate indoor and outdoor comfort level and ventilation strategies; prepare optimized design objects by using integrated parametric design method: Rhino and Grasshopper; prepare digital models to build physical models for design development and presentations; develop and produce construction documentation, including documenting architectural plans, elevations, and details in imperial or metric standards; participate in meetings with clients, consultants, contractors, and public agencies on a given project and coordinate for client and agency review and approval; coordinate with civil, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection (MEP/FP), lighting, landscape, code, traffic, parking, zoning, acoustic, security, curtain wall, façade maintenance, special systems, vertical transportation, and structural consultants to incorporate building systems into unified design; perform necessary modifications of drawings and specifications as construction projects progress and changes in dimensions, materials, and other aspects of design arise from client, agency or public input; manage project data and transmission and all electronic communications using project information management software Newforma; respond to requests for information (RFI’s), and review and respond to contractor change orders; assist in identifying weekly project requirements and projecting long term needs; review structural construction for architectural coordination, HVAC system layout and installation, installation of lighting fixtures, and installation of electrical equipment.
Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or foreign equivalent plus five years progressive experience (or Master’s degree in Architecture or related field plus coursework or internships) to include predesign and all phases of commercial, residential and urban environment projects, including new construction, remodeling, interiors, unit plans, and site planning; researching domestic and international building codes and regulations, collecting data, and writing reports and presentations to incorporate research and data into architectural designs; preparing space plans to program a facility based on an analysis of client space needs; translating clients' functional and spatial requirements for structures into feasible design solutions, incorporating custom detailing, structural engineering principles and building systems into architectural designs; preparing 3D energy models to evaluate daily sun exposure, analyzing heatloads, and maximizing energy savings using EnergyPlus (Designbuilder, OpenStudio); preparing 3D Daylighting simulation model in Radiance, Daysim; preparing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation to evaluate indoor and outdoor comfort level and ventilation strategies; preparing optimized design objects by using integrated parametric design method: Rhino and Grasshopper; developing documents for each design phase such as schematic design, design development, construction documents including documenting architectural plans, elevations, and details in imperial or metric standards; analyzing sketches, photographs, notes, and site survey of existing conditions & other input material to determine best approaches for completion of drawings to solve and coordinate technical issues of design in relation to building structure, HVAC system, fire protection and materials for intricate detailing; free hand sketching of perspectives, axonometrics, space plans, elevations, sections, and details for presentations; design development and presentations using 2D/3D CAD and building information modeling programs, including Revit, AutoCAD, Rhino, Grasshopper, Maxwell, and SketchUp, applying own judgment, analysis and computer skills to develop 3D building computer models and images, and presentation images; producing design documentation with PhotoShop, Illustrator, InDesign, and free-hand sketching; coordinating conceptual design drawings with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection (MEP/FP), structural, and lighting, landscape, signage, acoustic, vertical transportation consultants to incorporate engineering systems into architectural designs to produce construction documentation and secure client and regulatory approval; responding to request for information (RFI’s), and assisting in reviewing and responding to submittals.
Director of Sustainability
Identify and analyze sustainability issues related to various architectural projects with the end goal of reducing the amount of resources needed to sustain each system; set project sustainability vision and associated goals related to reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable water use, sustainable waste and construction waste management; materials, construction technology and buildability, health, well-being, and sustainable lifestyle, and smart and connected buildings; set targets as a sub-set of goals, collaboratively with the design teams, partners and clients to form the basis of the performative design Key Performance Indicators; identify suitable staff, employee, manage and lead a team of environmental modeling specialists, sustainability specialists, environmental and materials analysts and sustainability champions within the firm; mentor junior staff to ensure that performative design from an environmental, economic and social standpoint is considered at all stages of design and by all staff within AS+GG; engage directly with staff to support sustainable design efforts; identify future trends in environmental issues as they relate to the built environment and ensure, where appropriate, that these are addressed during the design process; show innovation in relating the built environment to the natural environment through promoting ideas such as the concepts of urban ecology, biomimicry and biophilic design; oversee the preparation of benchmarking reports to illustrate technologies based on International experience and best practices; oversee the development of innovative tools to allow AS+GG to better communicate performance from an embodied carbon standpoint; evaluate our office operations and offer solutions to make the office more sustainable; oversee the implementation of a Corporate Sustainability Reporting system and serve as the sustainability expert for all of our current projects; develop Environmental and sustainability reporting and the development of carbon action plans as a future business opportunity; identify educational, training, or other development needs and opportunities for employees; ensure the firm employs best practices, both from a national and international standard, to ensure that the firm remains a global leader in the field of sustainable design; represent AS+GG at a national and international level by participating in seminars, workshops and conferences.
PhD in Environmental Science, Ecology, or a related field or foreign equivalent plus 3 years experience to include working in an environment and sustainability management capacity; working on high profile internationally significant projects; working with local and regional governmental bodies and agencies to develop strategic relationships; working with Estidama or BREEAM Green Building Standards and local codes and dealing with local permitting bodies such as environment agency and public utilities bureaus; working with other cultures and understanding local priorities and considerations for sustainable design; relating infrastructure to the built environment and to residential population behavior; writing environmental policies including office policies, environmental management plans and strategic direction planning; public speaking at Internationally recognized conferences on environmental related subjects; building, leading and managing a team of directly hired employees and specialist consultants; proposing sustainable design solutions and practical applications of technology in the built environment and understanding how such technological advancements may affect or impact sustainable outcomes; developing complex ideas and testing their applicability to solving a particular problem; using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze the environments where master planning or building construction is planned so that the design can be adapted to the natural environment; managing environmental or sustainable practices during construction incorporating knowledge of building and construction techniques; applying understanding of sustainable supply chain management principles which influence or are adapted to provide lower carbon construction products.
